The modern day American Indian movement had its roots in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. Indians were late comers to the civil rights movement. With the occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1969 by the Indians of All Tribes, Inc. and the occupation of Wounded Knee by AIM, the movement reached its high point. AIM began in Minneapolis about the same time as young American Indian college students from UC Berkeley and SF State began to take active roles in bringing to light injustices among Indians. The result of their actions and the movement in general can be traced to Federal enactment of legislation to bring self-determination to Indian tribes (see Indian Self-Determination Act).

Very brief summary...sorry.

you phrased it like it's OVER.

AIM = American Indian Movement. It's nothing like it once was. they'd rather protest mascots then fix a grandma's roof on the rez. or make sure people have food.

now as for Indians Fighting for OUR rights in General, the WAR is still on. It's just changed Battle Fields. Now it's fought in the courts and the senate.
