If you mean ground invasion--No, we lack the troops required to make a go of it. If you mean Shock and Awe II--well that is more likely, but a pretext will have to be manufactured first. Just War and all that. I am not condoning this but merely
pointing out realities.
As to ramifications:
1.Iran would seek out either the Chinese or the Russians as a Great Power Protector. Thus getting a Nuclear umbrella, with strings. Cheaper Oil would be the cost of that--IMHO.
2. That would put us in direct confrontation with either, or both of those Powers. Not a very good situation, but not unmanageable either.
3.The Caspian Basin would slip entirely from our grasp.
4. Radicals would be strengthened within Iran and Syria, as well as in the Central Asian Republics. With the real possibility of a more generalized war ensuing.
5. Oil would become about 25-50% more expensive than it is at the present time. From the closing of the Persian gulf the oil tankers--the Iranians could probably close the Straights of Hormuz for about a week. And in this time the speculators in London, Zurich, Berlin, Moscow, and New York would go into a buying frenzy that could very likely collapse our economy.
6. We would become even more of an international pariah. We would be accused of being bullies and all that--even while those that accuse profited from our actions. It is a Machiavellian world after all.
7. Our Allies in the region would be struck by even more terrorist activities than they are at present. This is because while the USA is safe behind an oceans Turkey,Israel, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the Uniter Arab Emirates are not.
8. Our Armies morale would hit rock bottom as they would know that this would mean even greater extensions in Iraq.
9.Iraq would spin absolutely out of control. The Iranians would conduct asymmetrically warfare on us in Iraq at a level that is the nightmare of the ground Commanders in Iraq. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps are not a bunch of yahoos, they are professionals and could make Iraq unholdable for us. This is why you here of them all of the time: They are good.
All not necessarily in that order, or course. These are my opinion as to what would happen.

I do not think that it is likely that the US will invade Iran, there is not enough support for an invasion in either the congress or among the American public. An invasion of Iraq would not be possible at the present time, we simply do not have a large enough army for the purpose. An invasion would require a full scale draft to get the one to two million soldiers needed for the job. If you think that the occupation of Iraq has been a mess then trying to hold down both Iraq and Iran would an exponential increase in the problem.

God help us if we invade Iran. Haven't we learned anything in the invasion of one sovereign Middle Eastern country already? Good grief. Diplomacy should be tried. It wasn't with Iraq. Sanctions should be tried. They worked with North Korea and maybe they will work with Iran. It may take awhile but the very last resort should be war. I mean very, very last resort. I know the jingoists and war mongers can't wait. They are drooling over the prospect of more death and destruction. They can't wait until we have a draft and no more treasury to cover the cost of the war. Hopefully the diplomats will win out and we won't be rash or hasty with Iran as we were with Iraq.

The chances of an all out military invasion at this time are slim to none. However, a brief (up to one week) sustained air and missile strike along with special force ops is possible. I think this would be similar to the action taken by Israel against the Iraqi nuclear plant in 1987.
For a variety of reasons, the ramifications of such an action might be enormous. For one, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinijad is a believer in the "Hidden Imam" of Shi'ism, who is prophesied to return and restore the glory of Islam. Ahmadinijad has been on record saying it might be good to hasten his return by "wiping Israel off the map" (those are his words) and attacking the non-believers (i.e. the West). By attacking him, it would legitimize him in the eyes of many who have so far dismissed him as delusional.
Second, by attacking Iran right now, we might inadvertently increase the Shi'ite support of the Sunni-Wahabist Osama bin Laden (which would play into his hands).
Third, as bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, Mullah Omar, Abdullah Azzam have said, restrained military responses by the US have not deterred but have encouraged its' enemies due to a perceived weakness or inability to use full force.
Don't get me wrong. I feel we should deal with Iran....and quickly. We must not, however, expect to quiet Ahmadinijad by slapping him on the wrist.

What did Iran do to the US and what danger Iran represents to the US? Why does US suppose to start any war with any country and/or to invade any country? Why do some ignoramuses which posted their stupid answers here think that US will ever beat Iran or even will be able to invade this country. Did it ever crossed your empty minds that Iran will beat the s_it out of the US in the event of any military conflict between those two countries. Just pull your fingers out of your anuses, pick your nose, find a switch in there and turn on your brains.

What the Iranians fail to realize is the fact that we have enough nuclear weapons to total annihilate the whole country of Iran. Our government SHOULD flex our nuclear muscle. We should let the Iranians know we can & will destroy their country if they attack America. The only thing that makes us a "super power" is our arsenal of nuclear weapons. All the buls**t talking heads on sunday political talk shows tell us the surge is "working". Our army is stretched very thin. If it wasn't the soldiers wouldn't be forced to stay in Iraq for 15 months deployment. I think there is one thing that people don't realize; generals are in favor of war, they trained & schooled for fighting war all their lives. They finally get a chance to actually play in war they don;t want to give it up. If we continue down the same path we are following we will be defeated. I don't want to see that. We NEED to protect America, not make Corporate American richer than they are(if that is possible)! My feeling & thoughts.

No.
It would be disasterous for both sides. Though the US Military could mop the floor with the Iranian Military if it came to it, it would not be as easy a victory as the first salvos of the Iraq War, there would be more casualties, and the operation would have to be aproached more realistically than Iraq if it were to succeed. Americans are already tired of War, so it would be political suicide for the administration that launched it, the more so because of the tougher fighting. Iran, of course, would be looking at the same grim fate as Iraq. There's some concern about America's 'global image' - but, I doubt there's anyone out there who would hate us for invading Iran who doesn't already hate us, anyway.

God, what is wrong with Iran? What the hell are they thinking? Arming the sectarian violence in Iraq? Shooting their mouth off? No invasion will ever happen, but you can bet the CIA will have Iran's *** in one way or another.

After seeing what the president of Mexico said today, you might want to think about a possible war with Mexico now.
