The answer is probably a little different for everyone. It's like asking "What makes you get out of bed in the morning?" Some people write just to express themselves, and some people write to try to make sense of the world. Some people write because they think it's a fun way to make some extra money, and some people write because they don't think they're good at anything else. I write for all those reasons, and because it keeps me alive. When I'm writing, I look at the world differently; I see order in the chaos and chaos in the order. It's a different experience. It takes me out of the mundane ritual and allows me to slow things down as I please, to look closer and delve deeper. In real life, it all flies by. You only get glimpses of other peoples' experiences. You don't often have time to sit around thinking about what it all means. But when you're writing, you pay attention. You express yourself, yes, but you also get to try to figure out what it's like to be other people. You get to find meaning, and make meaning of your own.

WHY!!!!!!!!!!??? I myself am a writer, and I do it because of a few things-
first- I LOVE it!,
second- it seems like the story i'm writing is happening in my head and it keeps me entertained at school and stuff
third- to write down those brialliant scenes that sometimes pop up in my head,
fourth- to make up awesome charecters
fifth- for someting to do
sixth- its a lot of FUN
seventh- it makes my friends happy
eighth- its the only thing i'm good at, besides reading
ninth- It makes me excited
tenth (but not least)- it makes me soooo happy, and it gives you a reason to live (keeps you away form depression)
all right- let me simplify that- It's fun, I LOVE it, I enjoy it, it makes me and others happy, and WHY NOT??
And its my passion!!

I write because I HAVE to. The world just doesn't seem right if I'm not working on a book, or planning another one. It's like eating and breathing. Writers write because everything is out of alignment when they aren't. Not writing is like starving ourselves.

Writers have to get out the words that are in their soul. They Usually have a better understanding about the world around them and want to pass that on.

Mostly as a way of self-expression. I believe Isaac Asimov once said he was such a prolific writer because he liked to write, not because he wanted money. He had a hard time pulling himself away from the keyboard to go to his day job.

Oh my Golly I love to write- doesn't matter that I"m not very good at it !
there is just something inside that compels me to "put it on paper" It's almost like the urge to sing when you are happy , or sad or, rocking a baby.
The thoughts sometimes need to be written down in order to work things out or to express them properly, or to express them at all.
Writing is even better than stomping my foot when I'm mad .
I'm almost always surprised when I come back to something I have written . Gee did I write that ? It is a need that has to be expressed !

Writers write because it's what they like to do, and they're good at it. Why would you write if you were a writer?

Because we have to. Not writing is impossible even though writers will sometimes do anything to avoid writing we come back to it. Not writing becomes almost painful. Writing makes everything come together in our heads.

That's almost like asking why does the sun shine? It's really simple. For some it's just what they do. For others it's a way for them to convey their feelings. For me it's kinda like my way of venting and not taking my emotions out on anything/anyone else. And I suppose it's a combination of everything. Why do professional football players purposefully hurl themselves into a physically (and mentally) insane game? It's just what they do...

I'm going with Persiphone's answer. This is our hobby, our artform. Other people like sports, some like music, some like cooking, some like collecting stuff, etc.
I started writing because of how much I like books. I wanted to have a book out of shelves that people would read. After that, I actually tried it and I love it. I'm not so great at it, but I'm getting better.
