Since brakes are a lot easier to replace than clutches, most people agree that you want to limit downshifting and use the brakes more. I usually downshift to about 3rd and then push in the clutch when the speed gets down to about 15-20. If I'm stopping a trailer or need to stop fast, I'll downshift to 2nd, but I don't on a regular basis.

You can shift out of gear into N without using the clutch and the car won't complain (as long as you're not on the gas!) but I think it's best just to use the clutch anyway.

While driving, the rule is to alway leave the vehicle in gear, and use the clutch in case you want to disengage. If you are braking, you can downshift to aid the brakes. You never want to just pull it into nuetral though.

use your brake first, then as you are slowing down depress your clutch before you start to feel your vehicle stall, then down shift continuing to brake until you feel comfortable enough to depress the clutch and come to a complete stop. You never want to just throw it into neutral and rely solely on the brakes to stop you, if they fail your motor and transmission engaged can help you stop, even if you have to shut off the motor.

always press clutch before changing, even to neutral.

It is easier on the transmission if you use the clutch
