Best advise i can give you or anyone else. NEVER get into debt. The most valuable asset you will ever have is your job.
Never apply for a credit card and pay cash for everything. Don't be fooled by people telling you that you need credit. If you will ever have the need for credit to purchase a home and have enough cash downpayment you will be accepted, believe me.
You work too hard to earn money to give it away each month to credit card companies. The amount some people pay in interest is more than what they earn in 401K or other investments. Think about that.
Goals? Stay out of debt, save six months salary for emergencies (so you won't go into debt), then save for retirement.
You smart to ask. Now, be smart and take some good hard earned advice. It cost me a fortune to learn this. It is yours for free.

Saving money for the future. If you put away 5000 dollars yearly for the next 15 years...you will have a good retirement. Do it now...I am too late and need a sugar daddy.
