Ohio State prides itself on being THE Ohio State University. From a buckeye point of view it is really not meant to be arrogant, it's simply the way you're taught to say it and it's how you show pride in the school you went to. You'll notice in the NFL when players introduce themselves, the ones from OSU will say, "The Ohio State University". Anyway, I think UM fans like to use "tOSU" to somewhat poke fun at this and using the lower case "t" instead of an uppercase one is another way of trying to make fun of Ohio State.

The official name of the school is "The Ohio State University" as in THE university for the State of Ohio. I believe at one time they got the Ohio legislature (which is conveniently down the street) to declare them THE state's school.
