FIND ANOTHER MECHANIC!!! You did not specify what engine you are talking about, but a head gasket change is VERY EXPENSIVE due to labor involved. The parts are not so expensive..unless foreign, but the labor will kill you. This does not sound right that he can find a lot of water in the oil and not change the oil...not impossible, but suspicious.
Good Luck

I'm not sure where these nitwits got the idea you have to pull the engine to change the head gaskets.
There was no reason not to do an oil change. In fact, if you had coolant in the oil, it definitely should have been done. And, you don't have an oil tank. This mechanic sounds a little fishy. Best take it somewhere else for an opinion.

It will be expensive since they have to take the motor apart to replace the gasket.

are you sure that they said it wouldent cost alot??? it is very costly because the entire engine has to be removed to fix the head. sometimes there is a sealer they can put on to fix it.(pretty much just a bandaid)
