You`d have to apply the brakes immediately ........ come to a complete stop ............. get a large basket out of the trunk .......... then walk back and pick up all the bits and pieces you can find from your engine and transmission .
Put everything you found in the trunk ......... call a tow truck ............ and have them tow what`s left of your vehicle to the Auto Press !
The Auto Press pays you for your vehicle .............. you pay the tow truck driver ............... and you still have twenty bucks clear profit !

Apart from being a really silly thing to do i actually know someone who done it a rover 416, this was all tarted up and tuned but the bloke was a pillock of a driver racing anyone an everyone, was not concentrating and changed down into first @ approx 80 - 90 mph both front wheels locked up he went skidding accross 3 lanes of carraigeway lucky it was late not many cars about, the gear box was shattered to pieces as was his engine the debris went for about a mile down the road, he was promptly nicked got three months porridge, and a two year ban, and he will have to take his test all over again, hope that answered it for you, thinking of trying it ? lol

If you were able to get it into that gear at that speed, and then dumped the clutch, then you would come to a rapid halt as the wheels tried to drive the gearbox and engine faster than they can physically move, and something would go BANG in a big way and you would kill your car. It's that simple.
Additional to above:
Only by going down through the gears. Not from 5th to 1st...

Hi
The driven wheels would lock up and you would skid off the road. If you survived that and the car was still in one piece it would need a new gear box and possibly a new engine.
Your friend could have said use the handbrake of course but there you go!
Best regards
Geordie

You would blow the engine and eventually come to a halt- possibly in a ditch or something. However, should you find yourself doing 90mph down a motorway and discover your breaks have been mysteriously cut, you could use the 1st gear option to stop the car...

You wouldn't be able to. You'd shred the synchros on a manual and an automatic won't go into first till the car is going slow enough.

Your gearbox would likely shatter and cause your car to skid off the road, not to mention irreparable damage to the engine.

I woundnt recommend it, but it would down shift to 2 nd gear. Will not go into fist because there is a modual in the tranny that tells it not to do it after a certain rpm.
