Prostitution is Legal in Singapore but designated to a few red light district. One of which is the famous Geylang.
Like everything else in Singapore it is highly controlled by the govement so prositution is only allowed in the brothels and all the ladies (registered with the govement/police) working there go for periodic checks for STDs. They even have a health card they you can ask for to see when was the last time they had a check. These ladies also pay tax so its a legal occupation.
If you plan on visiting these places just remember - be safe not sorry ... wear protection

Prostitution is legal, to a certain extent. Streetwalkers are not licensed, and are probably overstayers or maybe even on a student/social visit pass. Brothels are the only legal form of prostitution, in a bid to regulate the trade. There is a common misconception that prostitution illegal, as there are frequent raids on such Streetwalkers, but there are licensed brothels. However, such brothels do not care much for regulation as well. They are supposed to only allowed those over 18, but a couple of years ago, a reporter posing as a potential customer walked into one and asked if it would be ok for a younger underaged brother to 'try the girls'. The answer was 'no problem'.
Basically you won't get arrested or anything if you go to a proper brothel, but just try to be safe.

Why does everyone think that prostitution is illegal in Singapore? It IS legal however strictly regulated. Prostitutes are registered with the police, pay tax, carry a health card (which customers have the legal right to check), go for mandatory std check ups and are restricted to licensed brothels in specified red light districts.
Pimping, soliciting in public and certain sexual acts are illegal though.

With permit, yes. Without permit, no. In Geylang, there're 2 types of operators. Those you see in terrace houses with red light bulbs in the doorway are licensed brothel. They charge between S$40-50, for 20mins of fun. Those touting by the roadside and operating in some dark, secluded, run-down shacks are all illegal. They charge anything between S$30-150. Then there are the pimps/taxi drivers hanging in front of Orchard Tower. These are the guys to look for if you're into more 'exotic' girls like Russians, Czech, and occasionally Japanese & Koreans. These are not legal and charges range from S$150-250 for an hour.
