Hold it up to the light and check for water marks,but the best way would be to take it to the bank to verify that it is real or fake,if it is fake they will confiscate it and your out of that money. Did somebody give you some fake money? I hope not

I know that there are special pens which can be used to make marks on the bills and it will identify many problems with the money.
I sounds as if you have been already taken.

If you are talking about bills such as 1's, 5's etcetera, they have a pen that banks and casinos use.

I would suggest you take it to a bank for authentication. But, there is a problem, if it is 'funny money' they must confiscate it and you will not be compensated.
