Just got back in school and am taking geometry, the teacher gave us an algebra review and my memory has faded a bit. The +8 and -9 are the two that get me. 3x+8=2x-9

Valeria messed up all around. Plug -1/5 into the equation to see if that's right. Even after editing, she's still wrong.

I'd say just start with the 8.

Subtract 8 from both sides to get 3x by itself.

3x + 8 - 8 = 2x - 9 - 8 or (3x = 2x -17)

Subtract 2x from both sides to get the variables all on one side.

3x - 2x = 2x - 2x -17 or (x = -17)

Plug it in to verify.

3(-17) +8 = -43
2(-27) -9 = -43

It works.

3x - 2x = -9 -8

Or

x = -17

You basically have to get the x's on the left, and the numerals on the right. So subtract the 2x from the right by adding -2x to it, so then you have to also add -2x to the left. That gives you 3x-2x on the left, or just plain x.

Then you have to get rid of the +8 on the left, so you add -8 to each side, leaving you with (-8) +(-9) on the right, which equals -17 on the right.

That's the answer. x= (-17)

-------

Idb83, you messed it up, too. There's nothing about multiplication up there, the way the contributor wrote it. Perhaps it was written incorrectly, but your answer does not answer the question that was asked.

Sincerely,
Me

Hugs...

ok what u wanna do is isolate the x so to do so, get the like terms on one side of the equation.

3x+8 = 2x-9
we can subtract 2x from each side and subtract 8 from each side

which will give us x = -17

breakdown:

3x+8 = 2x-9 // whatever you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other.

3x-2x+8 = 2x - 2x -9
x + 8 = -9 //now you can subtract the 8 to get x alone
x + 8 - 8 = -9 - 8
x = -17

if u wanted to do the equation the other way, by moving the 3x to the other side you'd do this:

3x + 8 = 2x - 9
3x - 3x + 8 = 2x - 3x - 9
8 = -x - 9
8 + 9 = -x + 9 - 9
17 = -x // -x is like saying (-1)x so you can simply multiply each side by -1, which leaves you with x = -17 as well.

I am pretty horrible at math, but isn't it:

3x + 8 = 2x - 9
3x - 2x = -9 - 8
x = -17

or

3x + 8 = 2x - 9
9 + 8 = -3x + 2x
17 = -1x
x = -17

Meh, I feel dumb, but what you originally want to do is get x so it's by itself (x = ?).

In order to do that, you sometimes have to take numbers and move them to the opposite side of the equal sign. When you do this, a negative number will become positive and vice versa.

Hope I helped a little.

3x+8=2x-9
-2x -2x
x+8= -9
-8 -8
x= -17
step 1: write the equation
step 2: subtract 2x from both sides
step 3: you are left with x+8=-9
step 4: subtract 8
step 5: you are left with -17

if you want to solve for x...isolate the x on one side of the equation.

3x + 8 = 2x - 9 (lets put x on the left side of the = sign and the numbers on the right side. so let's subtract 8 from both sides so you would get..)

3x = 2x - 17 (now we subtract 2x from both sides)

1x = -17
x = -17

to make it clearer, i'll solve for x on the right side of the = sign.

3x + 8 = 2x - 9 (now we add 9 to both sides since i want to isolate x on the right side)

3x + 17 = 2x (subtract 3x from both sides)
17 = -1x
17 = -x (we never want our variables to be negative, so we multiply both sides by -1)

-17 = x is your final answer.
