Fiber is probably the best answer - but sometimes you need something a little stronger to "cleanse" your system. Something along the lines of a laxative - or perhaps that "White Lightning" stuff that they make you drink before going in for a colonoscopy ;););)

I concur with most of the responses you've already received. More water, more fiber, more exercise (brisk walking, daily is a very good stimulant, about 30 minutes each day), less alcohol, less pain medication, try a laxative or enema, if the preceeding are ineffective. Please note, if this is a big change in his bowel habits, he needs to see a doctor.

No response on here should be given more weight than that of a licensed physician.

You know it's not the times you go to bathroom but the quality (soft/hard) of your sht. Anyway your husband should eat vegetable, fruit which contain fibers. He can also use cereals (allran etc.).The fibers will make his bowel twitch. He has to drink tons of water.,so his black creations become softer.
If nothing works you should visit a doctor, cause he 's got a problem with his bowel biota.
Before the doctor,go to your closest store and just make some questions, you don't have to buy anything they tell you ,just ask them.

Lots of Fiber products can help too. Plenty of water. Also walking is an excellent way to keep things flowing

First, as noted by others, one has to have a good fluid intake to soften the stools for regularity. My personal beverage is milk, but not all people enjoy it. I normally drink close to 3/4 gallon of liquids a day, depending on how much I sweat.

Prune juice, the real thing, or Apple juice often works. Drink like a pint of either once or twice daily, as required. Prune juice, if real, usually works fairly fast so be prepared!

Or eat a quantity of dried prunes. I find them, and dried golden raisins, tasty, and they work, but slower than juices. I take them to work with me to snack on as time permits. Regulate the input of these fruits and juices as required though; too much and you get the irresistable runs. Start off slowly!!

Another issue is to get a lot of bulk in. Cabbage, grated in salads or as Sauerkraut works well, if you eat a large serving. Large mixed greens salads also work well, tho not as well as cabbage. A garlic dressing seems most useful for me. Cabbage with its sulfides and disulfides is especially good for the colon; helps prevent several diseases and promotes regularity.

And it helps to get adequate exercise, not sitting or lying around all the time. A good brisk walk around the block often helps.

And finally, 3 regular meals a day plus possibly a bedtime snack helps, just from the bulk. Veggies help. I cook mine in the meat juices (in a crock pot) for better flavor to my taste.

I know about some of these problems and make sure I get enough liquid, enough bulk, and enough of the good natural spices, or I pay the consequences!

And also, you can get into trouble with too much use of various over-the-counter laxatives. Regular use gets the system acclimated, and then it is very hard to return to normalcy. I do not think the taking of the usual commercial fiber stuff helps much either, from observation. Natural plant fibers seem to be much better. Celery if you like! I like Chard and Kale in salads, and they have good bulk. Lotsa vitamins too!

And nearly all spices in the allium family, and turmeric, are good for the large intestine. Onions, Garlics, and turmeric; use them in most dishes I can, and cabbage when I have the opportunity, usually as slaw or kraut.

Finally, do not discount raw ginger, or ground ginger if raw is not available. I get my raw ginger from a friend in Singapore, as stamp-sized rough pieces from their Botanical Garden. Helps the top end, the stomach, in the digestive system especially. I put it in most meat dishes and a number of pasta dishes. Also good for upset tummy; in an emergency ginger ale even works if made with real ginger!

Enough bulk, enough liquid, and some toning spices for the bowels, and I think you can lick the problem. And naturally. Good success.

It is very possible that he is dehydrated. Have him start drinking 100 - 120 ozs of water a day. Also, he should stay away from caffiene.
