Okay, let's say that hypothetically, General Patreus reports that the surge turned out to be an utter failure. It didn't improve anything at all and only made things worse.

Would the Cut-And-Run-Crowd (refering to members of any and all parties who are for an immediate withdraw) use this is an example of why we should leave immediately? Of course they wolrd, who wouldn't?

Now, if any reasonable person would believe that, why, then, is this same crowd, who months earlier were damned sure that the Surge would not help, now saying that it's success apparent means nothing?

Do you consider it hypocrisy that some people would use the Surge's failure to further their point when it suits them but call it irrelevant when it doesn't?

Well, sure! It doesn't matter what Patreus reports the cut and run crowd will still want to cut and run. I honestly think that even if there was a marked difference in Iraq, they'd STILL want to cut and run and make up some sort of story. Absolutely!

I mean, didn't delphi just prove our point? Doesn't matter what you say or even if the liberal media reports, as they have, that the surge has been a success. The cut and runs will always want to cut and run and will find some sort of nonsense to back themselves up.

Wow!

The GAO does not agree with Patreus, AND the surge was suppose to give the Iraqi government the ability to govern. If the US military's job is to police other countries, then they are doing their job. If their job is to defend this nation against an invading army then they are currently doing someone else job for them.

We pay the US military to protect America's shores. Bush has them directing traffic and searching private residences 7000 miles away from home. What is the purpose of having a military if they are going to be used as police officers for some other country?

Alpha male, your point is teetering towards both sides. You and I both know that a General is not going to say anything against his Commander In Chief. The surge is in my opinion only being reported as a success. I have given up on all media at this point.

This would be correct if we had said that if the surge was shown to be working then we should stay. However, most of us said that the surge working or not was irrelevant from the beginning. If the surge isn't working, that simply proves our point. If the surge is working, it doesn't really matter, as we're now in a position where actual victory is no longer possible. It isn't that hard to understand.

Considering the White House is taking over the actual writing of the report, the validity of that same report is suspect. I seriously doubt that the White House will give itself a failing grade. I don't consider myself a cut and run type but instead feel the troops are stuck there until a leader assumes command, not a guy who does a quick fly by to visit the troops in the dead of night.

Thinking people said all along that the success of the surge would not matter. If violence decreases with more force on the streets it says nothing about the stability of Iraq once we finally leave. It says nothing about whether POLITICAL STABILITY in Iraq is improving. It says nothing about whether we should be there or not.

That is why we were opposed to the surge in the first place. It was already too late to make a difference.

a famous quote:
"consider the source"

naturally we both know that Patreus will report good news. why would people doubt the accuracy of his report, for good or bad? well, simply put, he IS NOT a disinterested observer with an objective agenda. He is an employee of the president which = conflict of interest. now if an independent and impartial assessment were done on the situation that would be different.

your question is like asking "why wouldn't you trust the Chinese report that says that all toys are now lead free and safe" well duh, because they have a vested interest in making people trust their product and consume it.

Patreus's product is the Iraq War. Bush is relying on him to "sell it" to the American public. That's an actual quote from Bush by the way.

There is no such thing as an immediate withdrawal - it would take several months to plan; several additional months to initiate, and about 6+ months to complete, once started... (and this is probably at the fastest conceivable rate)

The only contradiction is that you haven't a clue what is supposed to happen in Spring of '08, when we will be forced (by logistics) to begin a draw-down...

It works both ways...Bush will use the report to try to prop up his case for the surge, despite the fact that the Iraqi govt has done nothing that was asked of it.
