I think that verse in the bible got stuck in my head that says "be ye therefore perfect" and I can't ever get it out completely.

We will never be perfect at the things we do. But we can always have the ATTITUDE of trying to do the best we can. And people should be able to understand that. Not aways demanding perfection.
Fear of rejection does play a big part, unfortunately, thrust subtly at us by the Media, Schools, Teachers, Colleges, and TV advertisements., and the Fashion Industry,
( look at the increase in bulimia and anorexia) And in some cases parents, demanding too much from their children. Better grade, better at the sport or whatever else they do.
We always told our girls to do their best in school, but it was not a big deal, if they were not the top of their class. A pass is ok. We never pressured them to do the things that we might have wanted to achieve in when we were young and didn't. We looked for their natural talents, tried to encourage them, but if they did not want to go there, we didn't push them.
Pressure on good sports people to get better and better for admission to Colleges and Universities. And then sadly, the disappointment they feel when they don't make it. I feel so sorry for a person when this happens, because it can lead to a total 'give up on everything' situation.
Our world is just too competitive. We demand too much of others, instead of admitting, that we are not perfect, so why should we demand it from others. And it's very difficult to be around 'perfectionists'.

Ceaselessly Striving
We can strive for perfection, but we'll never actually be able to attain it. Why? Because we're part of an evolving universe, a developmental process that is constantly in a state of becoming more, reaching higher. So in that context, the most evolutionary relationship to life is one in which we are ceaselessly striving for perfection, knowing full well that it is not attainable. We know that we will never reach perfection, but that's not what we're here for anyway. We're here to strive for that, perpetually. That's an evolutionary response: to perpetually strive for that always unreachable goal. When you strive for that, wholeheartedly, miracles begin to happen right now, and that's what evolution is all about.

Ah, but I strive for perfection in those things I DO, knowing full well that even though I am an imperfect person, I can still turn out perfect work.

I don't strive for perfection. I was born to people who did though. It's taken me most of my life experience to learn that I am already perfect in my God's eyes. I just have to learn to accept myself and my own humanity and experience this life and live it the best I can.
Boy, I've been having a lot more fun since realizing this. :O)

How do we strive? We go to school to be smarter, work out to be healthier and prettier, and compete to be more successful.
Why do we strive? Some for money, power and respect are selfish but it's noble if done for the good of others.
We'll never be perfect but we can be better with God's help.

Oh, I think for several reasons! If you are anal, like me, you simply want to do the best and look the best I can. In everything! I was taught...if you are going to do something, do it RIGHT or, don't do it at all! So, that stuck and I am now too much of a perfectionist!
Invite me for dinner, I'll clean your house! LOL Just the way I am! OH! I refuse to cook unless you do the dishes!

Seems to me that many strive for perfection in OTHERS only, rarely themselves...we have an amazing ability to overlook our own weaknesses and forgive our own failings, but hold all others to impossible standards. It is sooo easy to brush this off as "being human." Perhaps, as we age, we are less willing to brush things off as if they do not matter....I seek perfection in no one, and hope...yes pray..they forgive my weaknesses. After a long life, what I have noticed is that imperfections are what I love in others, and perfect people drive me nuts! Perhaps this is just me, but who among us can really stand to be around "perfect people?" I prefer to feel good about myself, not compare and come out the loser....no thanks! :-)

What make you think I'm striving for perfection. I am comfortably situated in all my imperfections and intend to stay there.

The Christians are all sinners. That's what they tell me anyway. I sin, but I am not going to beat myself up over it. I do not want to consider myself a sinner and resent anyone who tells me I am, therefore I do not attend those type of churches.
My mom strove for perfection. She is Christian, but her religion says that we are all made in God's image and likeness, therefore we are perfect.
I am as good as I can be. I just do my best to be considerate of other peoples feelings and enjoy the beauty of everything that God made for us. I don't want to be perfect. I don't like being around people who think that they are perfect. Give me a break!!!
