In a surface weather chart, the direction of wind will indicate where a low pressure systems is located.If you know some meteorology, you can look at the cloud movement(clouds move along winds) and approximately tell in which direction a low pressure or storm is located ,(if there is any nearby),without the help of any weather instrument
When winds change in the clockwise direction,they are said to veer.In that case you can tell that warm advection is taking place.Change in the reverse direction is said to be backing and in that case cold advection will takeplace.
In aviation ,wind direction is very important.Planes prefer head wind(opposite wind) to take off as it will give an easy lift and while landing also head wind helps them to land using minimum distance of runway.According to the wind direction the pilots choose the runway.For aviation purpose ,wind data is given every half an hour for an aerodrome.

Typically our weather is dictate partially by wind direction. If it's blowing from the west, and there is water to the west, it's more likely to rain, but if there are mountains to the west, you might get a rain shadow and less rain.

Wind is air moving from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. Because of the coriolis effect, caused by the rotation of the Earth, wind in the northern hemisphere moves into a low-pressure area in a counterclockwise (anticlockwise for many in Europe) direction as seen from above. In the southern hemisphere it moves clockwise.

If you face into a north wind, therefore (in the northern hemisphere), there would be a low pressure area to your right and a high pressure area to your left. They won't necessarily be exactly in those directions, but at least in those general directions.

So, in the northern hemisphere a north wind means that a stormy area (low pressure is responsible for many large storms) is to your east, and probably has passed (most storm fronts move west to east) and fair weather may be approaching.

However, local storms, such as "air mass" thunderstorms so common in the midwestern part of the United States produce more localized winds, and these tend to feed into the thunderstorms. These storms are miniature low pressure areas, but their winds are complex compared to large fronts. If you feel wind in one of those and it is blowing toward the storm, it is likely to be a pretty intense one.

At the seashore unequal heating of the ground and ocean produce land and sea breezes, still caused by low and high pressure areas, but not necessarily due to large fronts. Wind direction there isn't as indicative of large high and low pressure areas.

In the tropics there are general wind trends (the Trade Winds come to mind) that typically blow in one direction or the other, but they are due to factors other than low and high pressure fronts. I'm not a meteorologist, so it's up to you to find out their causes).

Finally, adiabatic winds can "fall" from the mountains. The general westerly winds (northern hemisphere) causes the air to rise along the windward side of mountain ranges and as it rises precipitation ensues (that's why mountains in the northern hemisphere are usually wet on the western side and arid or semi-arid on the eastern side). When the air crosses the mountains it compresses as it falls to the plains on the other side, heats up, and because it is hot and dry has a name..it's commonly called a Zephyr. Zephyrs have been known to melt large areas of snow and cause temperatures to rise dozens of degrees in just a few minutes.

If you live in a Hurricane area and one is coming in, it will tell you where the eye is..........

It also can tell you where you are relative to pressure systems.

A strong constant wind from the northeast would indicate that you are either southwest of a high pressure system or northwest of a low pressure system.
