At the beginning of the seam, sew forward a few stitches and sew in reverse to the beginning. Sew to the end of the seam, and again sew in reverse a few stitches, and go forward to the end of the seam. I don't know if this is called back tacking, but I stitch more than 3 stitches.

When you start, stich a half inch to and inch, go into reverse and stich back to where you started, and then go foward again, but just keep going this time to wherever you need to stop to finish the stich. You need to follow the stiches so that it 'locks'.
