My Friends by Teh Red Hot Chili Peppers is pretty simple, one of the first songs I learned.

Some other easy generic songs are Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, Vermillion the acoustic version by Slipknot, Good Riddance by Greenday.

Some of the ones I learned when I was starting were Scar Tissue by teh RHCP, Drive by Incubus, Over the Hills and Far Away by Led Zeppelin, Free Falling by Tom Petty, Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.

Yeah, so now I'm learning to play stuff by Andy Mckee on acoustic.
