Not completely sure but I think they can only be played on line and here is a link to a page that you can try out some of these games (there are some free trial ones and others that can be bought).

If you want a fun offline single-player RPG experience, I recommend buying a game console. If you are new to gaming, I recommend buying a PS2. They are inexpensive right now because of all the next-gen consoles, and the PS2 has a great selection of RPGs. Most of the games I'm listing have been out for a while, so you should be able to find most of them used at a Gamestop or EB Games store.
1. Dragon Quest 8 - Journey of the Cursed King. This is a turn-based RPG with cool cel-shaded graphics, an interesting way to invent weapons, armor, and items (using an alchemy pot), and a fun and often humorous storyline. A must buy!
2. Final Fantasy 10. This is an EPIC turn-based RPG with a wonderful deep storyline. If you like games with a great story, you can't go wrong with FF10.
3. Dark Cloud 2. This is an action RPG with a cute story, great weapon evolution, a "photography" based invention system, the ability to build towns, and loads of fun minigames.
Final Fantasy 12 is a great game too, but it's a bit newer, so it may be more expensive. There are loads more great RPGs for the PS2, but these are a few of my favorites. Enjoy!

It depends on the type of games you're into honestly. I can suggest a good game in each different category I can think of but its ultimately up to you. First is Morrowind: Oblivion for an immense RPG experience without having to go online. The game is huge and you have an insane amount of freedom. Then there is gears of war for a shoot em up experience that breaks away from Halo. If you want to go the survival horror (resident evil) route there is dead rising which is survival horror at a whole new level. Then of course you have Fable 2 for an RPG experience that isn't as intense as morrowind and more scenematic. Of course when it comes to sports nearly any madden game will do. That's all I can think of. Hope this helps. By the way if you want an immerse multiplayer experience you're gonna want a wii....

Yo - Yep you can, you play against the computer. Particularly with the older games. Most people tend to play online more now we have better Internet connection speeds. In shooting/war games they are so fast online, so competitive that noobs 'practice' from disc offline alone.
When you start speaking an entirely different language and get too competitive in online gaming you know it is time to stop playing online games and apologize to your mates.
I stopped playing a few weeks ago so here is the apology as requested: 2l55p e8 qs4 4addc - R - Roflmao

When I was a kid my older brothers would invite their friends over and we would play a superhero or dungeons and dragons roleplay. One person would be the director of the game, telling the story and playing the monsters. Then at 2am, we would go toilet paper someone's house. Then we might either go play hide and seek in the dark fields by the power lines and then come back to finish off the night with more roleplaying.
The new hip game for teenagers is that Vampires the masquerade one.

There are lots for different video game systems - I have played a bunch on X-box. Morrowind, Baldurs Gate, Fable, there are a ton of them. If your friend is talking about video games - then that likely what it is. I enjoy em, always have been a bit of a loner and set my own pace, explore what I find interesting. If your friend is talking about dice based games than I'm not sure. I suppose it could be done - more character development than anything.

There are some RPG games that are designed to be played by a single person. I haven't played one in a very long time, but I think that in some of these games, your choices affect the development of your character. The focus is on storyline and character development.
The following is for computers and videogame systems:

Any internet RPG is unable to be played offline, the challenge of other people is the entire point.
