All of the above...I have blinds in all my bathrooms, because I like the idea of letting the sun in, and still blocking the view straight on.
I have a roman shade in my bedroom that I made myself, which I fully intend to cover with a curtain made out of highly colourful Indian tapestry, just as soon as I can get myself to the store that sells the material. (Babysitting my three grandsons, and needing to be there to pick them up for lunch is a little limiting.)
Curtains that I made myself in the rest of the house. I keep an eye on the material for sale at WalMart in the $1.97 bins, and then buy the bolt when I find something that I like...I bring it home and wash and dry it (to pre-shrink it) then fold it up and store it in my sewing room to wait until I decide what to do with it. I have wonderful light weight damasks in both peach and a dark olive that are destined to become blouses for my oldest daughter--which I can finally get around to making, since I finally received the replacement pressure foot plate for my old Singer sewing machine.

On the lower portion of the windows
I got rice paper and painted designs on them
mostly symbolic artworks
and covered just the bottom half of the window
by attaching the paper right to the glass itself
When I have my porch locked off from outside the only thing visible is the lights on and a view of the ceiling unless someone is right up there looking out the upper part of the windows
But in the bedroom which has two sides with French Door type walls I have ceiling to floor drapes of heavy upholstery fabric to be able to completely darken the room even in bright sunlight
and since the Lady is now there too we now have sheer billowy curtains of the same size under the drapes. Actually I too like the sheer undecorated fabric there. When the drapes are pulled back and the doors all open those curtains do an enchanting dance in the winds and breezes and it gives another dimension of life to the room

Blinds and curtains. In fact, I just put up a new blind today because the cord that goes through the holes in the blind raveled and wouldn't work right. One side went up while the other side bunched up. Blinds are pretty cheap - at least the ones I buy from WalMart are - so I just junked the old one and put in a new one. I got hooked on re-threading a blind when I was a kid - for my mom - and don't want any more of that. It's unbelievably tedious.

We got rid of the last shades when we had the side-by-side windows in the living room replaced by an Anderson small bay. The windows in our addition are Pella windows with built-in blinds; the rest are Marvin replacement windows and I've hung mini-blinds and curtains at all. The bay has no blinds, but a full-width curtain can be closed if we wish. (It generally happens only at Christmas, when we have a "town display" with Byers Choice carolers and a Moravian star.)

I prefer Curtains, but I am currently renting and the windows in my apartment are about 10 feet tall, so I have opted to keep the standard blinds they provided. I would easily be paying a couple hundred to fit all the windows in this apartment.
And I guess that is not to bad but I am the type of person who likes a new look every other week so that would not work for me (money wise).

Get some bamboo poles that are somewhat longer than the window(s). locate some curtain rod holders the bamboo will in good condition into. Get some sheer fabrics (like mosquito netting they use contained in the rain wooded area) and drape it over the bamboo rod with a swag contained in the middle. the two facets do no longer must be even and that seems greater "organic" besides. you will discover a fabrics called "gauze" which will seem reliable and is attainable in lots of hues that are muted so it is going to upload without overpowering the room. I even have used a matching factor in my residing house different than I geared up cabinets accross the precise of the window and draped textile from 2 hooks at each and each end related to the cabinets. this way shall we "subject" the room by including products alongside the shelf. If we mandatory a transformation we purely replaced the products on the shelf. We had blinds so the "curtains" have been in basic terms for extra framing of the window.

Only shades just to keep rain out. No blinds, no curtains. I love the sunshine and the gusts of winds coming in. Though these is fine mesh to keep the mosquitoes out.

Hello,
I personally like blinds & curtains because if it gets dark you can just pull your venetian blinds you don't need to
close the curtains as well and they are so easy cleaned.
Hope this helps
