Probably some chemical being released inadequately.
Ask your doctor, and if he says that there's no danger in it: sit back and enjoy life!

Whoah... I do have a problem with someone smiling in the saddest moments. Are they taking joy in others pain, or in their own? That gives me the creeps, sorry. It borders on dissociative disorder, if you ask me. If something sad is happening in your life, and you only feel happy, then I don't think you are in touch with your life all too well. There is a subtle but substantial difference in "seeing the silver lining in every cloud" and refusing to let saddness into your heart.
With that said, I am all about finding meaning and integrity in the worst situations. I certainly don't go around smiling at the pain and suffering that is all over the world, but feeling sad doesn't make me unhappy or depressed, either. Feeling sad, feeling the worlds pain, they enable me to be truly empathetic and compassionate towards someone who suffers. If you can only smile in the face of someone who is crying, how much help is that going to be?
Otherwise, I will agree with the sentiment "keep smiling."

Don't knock it--you probably realize that even the worst problems will end, and that the good in your life still outweighs the bad. My ex-mother-in-law used to call me "Pollyanna" (as an insult, no less) because I try to find the good in others and in any situation. If I didn't, I probably wouldn't be able to cope.

Don't knock it...many people are miserable even in the most joyous moments. Yours is not a problem at this point--theirs is.

That's not a problem. most people are depressed about nothing, being happy is a challenge for most people anymore.
