What is the right expression to say that someone sat on the couch after a surprising news? I mean, is "landed on the couch" good enough?

I would fling myself languidly onto the couch, but only if there were no chaises longues about.

How about

"collapsed onto the couch"

which has rather nice alliteration, to boot.

sat down heavily on the couch
let herself drop on the couch

Or "fell to the couch"

If it is something shocking, I like "sank to the couch." As if they didn't have strength to stand any longer.
