Depends on how emotionally disturbed the person being attacked is. Also it is pretty immature to get in a persons face at a child's social event. What kind of person would do that? Everyone has their own believes and a person jumping someone else because they don't live up to their standards isn't the best answer especially at a family event. There are certain situations yes you stand up for your children but for smoking that's a bit extreme. I am a non-smoker but that was the persons choice to be at the event and they need to realize in public people have rights to...

who called who jerk, either way was probably correct, they're both jerks. the smoker for being totally inconsiderate and the other guy for not being tolerant. he can smoke but jeez its a kids soccer game. the other guy is allowed to smoke, deal with it.

No, calling someone a jerk is rude, but not verbal assault.
Verbal assault is when you threaten some ones well being.
