The power to which a number is raised. e.g.,
x^2 the index is 2
y^3 the index is 3

4^5 the index is 5
(2x)^5 = 32x^5 the index is 5
x^0.5 the index is 0.5 (1/2) - the square root.
The plural of 'INDEX' is 'INDICES'.

Example: 3^7
7 in this case is the index. It is a power to which 3 is raised, thus

= 3 * 3 * 3 * 3 * 3 * 3 * 3
= 2,187
