I am SO sick of people condemning those who drink &drive.First of all a lot of people do it and they don't think there is anything wrong with it until something bad happens.
Organizations like MADD want zero tolerance and to take away drivers license forever! WHY don't these stupid people get to the root of this problem? They are only looking at the issues after it happens, a first time drunk driver can kill someone just like someone who has had multiple dui's.
Look at bar parking lots, they are full & how many of these people are sitting in the bars drinking a soda, very few I would imagine. I've done it before & I'm not proud of it but once someone passes a limit people don't have enough reasoning abilities to make the right decision

These busy bodies and know-it-alls need to use their brains to come up with another solution. Condemning doesn't work and we all know it, they are judgemental and in my opinion closed minded and it's obvious they've never had problem w/ drinking.

Why don't these radical groups use their money and get car interlock devices standardized or make them affordable for people who want them. Or some type of key holding device that someone would have to blow into to access their car keys. Obviously these org. just want something to whine about otherwise they would have come up with alternative solutions that actually work.

I am sorry for anyone who is killed anyway BUT just as I thought you people are morons!!! I didn't say I condone it I was saying that these organizations need to put their $ into a solution that actually works. It happens and they need to find a solution that works.
Read & understand the question/comment before you open your mouth.

Again read the comment.
I did NOT say that they should pay for it, but instead of just telling people don't drink and drive why don't they lobby to have ingition devices standard in cars, like a baby seat is for kids?? They have influence to lobby for a more logical solution.

For example Saab has something called an Alcokey and it's a great idea.
Why don't DD organizations come up with something similar and market them at a reasonable cost??
Because DUI are the bread and butter of the states, law enforcement, lawyers, interlock companies.
Otherwise if they were so concerned about deaths and injuries from DD they would outlaw alcohol all together.
I cannot believe people are too stupid to see this.

2007-09-05 09:24:14 · update #4

I am very sorry for anyone who has had a loss because of a DD. However I am NOT in favor of DD I am in favor of them coming up w/ a solution that works. Warning against it hasn't worked AND taking aways licenses hasn't either.
This would cause a person to possibly not be able to work, possibly they would drink more and they are STILL going to drive. This is reality people FACE IT!!!!

I'm personally in favor of zero tolerance, but not for alcohol--I'd rather it was used for people who drive with their cellphones glued to their ears and don't pay attention to the road--it's been shown that the distraction of talking on the phone causes more impaired driving than driving drunk.

I used to work for the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and I've seen a lot of cases where people who can't drive because they had their licenses suspended. If you take their licenses away for long periods, they're more likely to drive anyway. There was one case where the driver had over 50 DUI's, had his license suspended for life because of it, and he just kept driving. So taking away the license forever isn't the solution, either. The best solution I've seen is the machine which is basically a breathalizer built into the car's ignition system--the person has to blow into it before driving. If he doesn't, or if he's over the limit, the car won't start.

Why are you asking the government to do for you what you can't do for yourself?? My brother was killed about 40 years ago by a hit and run driver. They never caught the person and I wonder if it was a drunk driver. Why can't you just take personal responsibility for your actions?? People are yelling that the government has to much say in what and how we live our lives and you want them to have more control?? Why not just don't drink and drive?? there are thousands of people who either don't drink and drive or if they drink they make sure that they have a safe way of getting home. Are you so immature that you can't do that?? That's the real question, not why doesn't MADD lobby for ignition locks. It's why does not the person take responsibility for their own life. You need to make changes in your life so that you don't drink and drive. What you're asking for here is our permission to drink and drive as you want others to take the responsibility from yourself to others. Is this what you teach your children to deny their responsibility for their mistakes because they will make them?? That makes no sense and I would wonder that you can even post the idea here?

1. they do have the blow in car thingy
2. org. don't have money to buy that stuff unless you want to donate some to them all they have is a mouth and the state to back them up
3. why can't humans own up for there own responsibilities. If you going out drinking why can't you be an adult and find a way home yourself why should you depend on someone else no one is forcing a drink down your throat. use your feet (oh i live to far) then leave earlier! I backpack okay so hiking 5-10 miles with added weight to me FOR FUN i'm sure someone who is drunk can handle there weight of there head if not maybe they should limit there selfs where they can! That is not my problem it's theirs!
4. if someone drinks to the limit that they don't know how to make the right decision then they need to get help! They offer that for free at AAA workshops (the free ones) I know cuz a friend of mine hosted on!
5. If your adult enought to drink your adult enought to know when to stop if not then your not an adult who owns up to your actions and needs to be punished so yeah removal of car, and license FOREVER!
6. I got the best solution get rid of beer wine and other hard liquire!!!
even tho i like wine!

Like you i'm not proud i drove when i shouldn't of but that was my choice I knew the consiquences and if i was busted i would had paid them grant you i wouldn't be were i'm at now in my life. bottom line it was my choice as it is yours and every other humans!
Using i'm drunk as an excuse don't fly anymore anyway unless someone put a gun up to your head and forced you to drink..

YES they need to come up with more punishments and other ways like a taxi service but money don't grow on trees! Maybe you should ask your state where the money goes for DUI fines it could go back to schools, state, roads, and maybe an ORG like MADD. but if that drunk in the bar can't offard a taxi how can one ORG offord one for each human who goes in a bar? If that was the case proverty would be over with!

Peeps just need to own up for there actions and untill then your going to have ORGS telling wining complaining ect if it were only a hand full i'm sure they would have more means do take more physical action!

Sadly condeming does work not for everyone but I went to a bar that offered for free a taxi service so no one would get a ticket or DUI did you know only half used that service?
so even if they have a driver who would take advantage of that... Hell they even gave you a discount at the hotel that was accross the street. only a few did that!
it was hard watching humans get into there cars when there were 5 drivers just waiting for someone to get in so they could drive!

I AM SORRY BUT YOUR WRONG. THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE LAWS TO GET THESE TYPE OF PEOPLE OFF THE STREET. DO YOU HAVE A BETTER PLAN? I FEEL DRUNKS SHOULD NEVER BE GIVEN THE CHANCE TO HURT OR KILL AGAIN. YOU GET DRUNK ONCE AND IT JUST GETS EASIER TO DRIVE THE 2ND,3RD TIME. YOU MAY NOT KILL IN THOSE TIME BUT IT WILL HAPPEN. I GUESS YOU HAVE NEVER LOST A FAMILY MEMBER TO A DRUNK OR WORST A CHILD. I HOPE YOU NEVER DO. BUT I HAVE AND IT THE HARDEST THING I HAVE EVER HAD TO DO IS BURY MY INFANT CHILD. SO FORGIVE ME IF THIS HITS HOME A BIT. AND THE ONLY THING THAT MAN GOT WAS PROBATION FOR A YEAR AND 2 MONTHS IN JAIL. DO YOU THINK THAT WAS JUSTICE?

Obviously, you've never had anyone close to you killed by some a$$hole drunk driver. When are YOU going to accept the responsibility of just not getting behind the wheel when you've had anything to drink? How hard is it to call a cab or have a designated driver?

Have you even looked into exactly what MADD does? In addition to their "condeming" a totally selfish and irresponsible act like driving under the influence, they also have student programs to educate and discourage underage drinking and alcohol abuse.

Educate yourself before you go spouting off ignorant statements about organizations that are actually doing good work to improve our communities.

Your anger over your ticket is clouding your point.

But yeah, all of these groups get very righteous and 'zero tolerance' and spit out like it was that easy.

The in-car devices only work if you don't cheat. Others can blow for you. Cops sitting at the bar driveway is considered entrapment (although very smart).

I think the idea is to get young people to understand the dangers which is why I think the programs where they wreck cars and show movies of dead victims is effective.

It's not about being busy bodies or no it alls, it is about keeping people informed. It is about holding people responsible for their actions. No, they are not going to save the world, but change begins with one person. If you have a better idea, why not start your own non-profit organization to do something better?

I did hear that there is a new car out that can actually tell if you have alcohol on your breath and the car won't start. I think that's pretty cool. I'm all up for the zero tolerance law as we have it here in NY.

your attitude would be different if you or a loved one was a victim of a drunk driver. I know mine is now, people need to be responsible for their own actions,, that includes driving a car....we can't babysit the drunks at the bar
