I see these Maury-esque cases where some guy is told "you're the father" and he steps up to what he thinks are his responsibilities. Sometimes it's a husband who doesn't know his wife is stepping out on him, sometimes it's a boyfriend who thought things were "exclusive," sometimes it's just some gullible geek who only got lucky because the girl already knew she was "with child" and wanted to pin it on him.
How about a straight-up requirement: Dad's name doesn't go on the birth certificate unless a DNA test is done.
We could even throw in an exception: If the man, after being advised BY A LAWYER, knowingly signs a waiver saying that he is the legal father and waives the right to verify the child's parentage via DNA.
No surprises, no GOTCHA, just see what the DNA says.

As a married woman who knows without a doubt that my husband is the father of my children, I agree completely. I know my husband is the father because I know that I did not have sex with anyone else. But what proof is there really? None.
There's proof that I'm the mother, because everyone in the delivery room saw the children come from my body. No one saw any proof that the children came from their father.
If this policy were put into place, it would eliminate so much fraud and heartache.

In Costa Rica, at least, it makes no difference who the biological father is. Once you MARRY a woman, you are responsible for whatever children she gives birth to.
I don't think this would be a baby drama eliminator, it would be a baby drama guarantee. 15%, according to a source cited above. And if the child isn't biologically the husband's, then what? Automatic divorce?
Do you support computerized DNA registration of everybody? Then we can also find the biological father, and force HIM to pay child support (or go to prison?). Does this sound like a great idea?
If you are hung up about the possibility you aren't the father of your wife's baby, you can arrange your own DNA test. Otherwise, is it anybody's business? Do you think this will end adultry or something? What's the point?

There was a study in England that looked at cases of disputed paternity. In 15% of married couples, the child was not that of the woman's spouse. It's not a bad idea.

First of all, can you say invasion of privacy? You can't force people do get a paternity test done, as it is none of the government's business.
Secondly, are you going to pay for it? Most people can't afford the bills that come with giving birth. It makes no sense to tack on an extra fee for no reason.

Who's going to pay for that? You're talking about a huge amount of expensive DNA testing.

agree with you, DNA test will proof in either way, how ever
they are people who do not care, they will raise that child as if she/he was his own.
and yes some will not do it. it depends on the relationship, if and when you realize that your partner is not the person who you thought she is then you have every right to refuse the responsibility.
the point is that you have to proove it.
