This dates back to King Edward VII. His birthday was in November, and due to illness one year, brought on by cold weather, he was unable to carry out the traditional Trooping of the Colour ceremony. The ceremony was moved to June to avoid his health problems, and the Official Birthday has been celebrated then ever since.
The present Queen acceded to the throne in February 1952, hardly a month for an outdoor event!

Actually the Queen celebrates more than two birthdays.

In Canada the Queen's Birthday is called "Victoria Day" and usually celebrated in May. Australia celebrates "Queen's Birthday" with an official holiday, which is usually the second Monday in June. However, in Western Australia "Queen's Birthday" is in October, this year the holiday is on 1st October.

"Queen's Birthday" is like "Labour Day" - you don't have to celebrate the occasion, but you certainly enjoy the holiday.

It is definitely to do with the weather. Not all monachs have two birthdays, however, the present Queen opted for a 2nd one so that the celebrations could be held at a time of year when it is more likely to be nice and sunny.

It has nothing to do with when she ascended to the throne.

It was my understanding that she celebrates her birthday when the weather in England is more conducive for public parades and such, her true birthday being in April.

My mother celebrates two birthdays also. Her "legal" one is the date she thought it was until she discovered when she was about 70 that somehow an incorrect date was used.

After consulting a perpetual calendar she discovered that she was actually born on January 14th, rather than the 9th.

When my sister was alive, we would call Mother on the 9th in order to receive our marching orders which had to be completed by the 14th. She will be 100 next year and I suppose an entire week would be appropriate?

My birthday is in the winter so I think I will have another in the summer what a good Idea. Same as the Queen.

It is to do with the weather, the weather in June is likely to be more conducive to public parades than April. June was her coronation (she ascended in February) but her official birthday is not the same date (or even week) each year. It is likely that Charles will also have an official birthday as his birthday is in October. William will not as his birthday is in June.

With two birthdays she get twice the presents. All of those footmen need a lot of socks you know.

Some people have birthdays only once every two or three years. My sister's like that. She has her real age, her in person age and her internet age, all drop off by about 5 or 7 years respectively.

It's about the weather and making the celebration in nice weather. Perhaps the "real" one she enjoys more quietly with her family. Personally, I'd rather have one five years, instead of two a year!

I think it is because she thinks June is a nicer month and has better weather than April.
Also, it can also be a public display for the people.

The official one is because the weather is better and it can be celebrated when it is sunny. Really. If you want to celebrate your birthday when the weather is better, go for it!
