I just heard on the Channel 4 news that a laboratory in Britain has finished its forensic tests taken from the hotel that Maddie McCann disappeared from.

Their results are so conclusive that the Portuguese police now believe that they are in a position to arrest an individual and charge him/her within the next couple of days.

Does anyone else have any further details about what this evidence is and who may be the culprit?

Madeleine: Forensic Results Returned

Updated: 18:48, Wednesday September 05, 2007
Police hunting missing Madeleine McCann have finally received the results of forensic tests from a laboratory in Britain.
Madeleine McCann

Sky News crime correspondent Martin Brunt has learned that the results are expected to lead to a significant development.

The tests were carried out on a large volume of material taken from the holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, where the McCanns were staying when Madeleine was kidnapped on May 3.

Forensic scientists in Birmingham, who carried out the tests, have been looking for evidence of the four-year-old's blood, saliva and hair.

They have also been looking for evidence of other people who could be linked to the investigation.

Sky's Martin Brunt said: "It could identify new suspects, it could affect the status of the only suspect in the case, Robert Murat.
Robert Murat

"It could explain something of what happened on the night she disappeared - or the tests could be inconclusive, which could lead to the winding down of the investigation."

He said that the fact that the apartment had been re-let after Madeleine's disappearance meant that finding relevant forensic information had always been considered a "difficult task" as it could have been contaminated by people staying there.

Portuguese police are not commenting on the results.

Brunt said the McCanns had not been officially told that the results had been handed over to the Portuguese police.

But he said both the family and the McCanns have invested the forensic tests with a great deal of importance, and that detectives were expected to have a meeting with the family about the results.

The only person named as a suspect so far is British expat Robert Murat, who lives near the apartment the family was staying in at the time.

He insists that he had nothing to do with Madeleine's disappearance.

Puddy

The niece I presume is Mrs Fenn's niece. Mrs Fenn was in the apartment above the McCanns. The niece claimed to have seen someone looking into the McCann's apartment around the time Madeleine was discovered missing and said her description matched the one given by Jane Tanner of someone carrying a child.

There is as yet no evidence that the niece spent time in the Tapas bar, so we can't call them the Tapas 10, perhaps the OC (Ocean club) 10.

seems to have taken a long time for the results to come back - and yes I read that an arrest was due in 48 hours, but which 48 hours?

If there are around 7 on the list 17pdr, it should give you 4 cross doubles, 3 cross trebles and a 7 horse rollup! Lets just hope its not just another rumour that will die the death. Its time that that poor child was found or her remains given a decent burial

I have listened to the news on BBC and not one word was said about Maddie. Surely if an arrest was imminent and the evidence so overwhelming it would have appeared on the main news channel.

No think we will just have to wait and see as thats something that is so wide to speculation depending on what your thoughts are with what has happened to that poor innocent child. Its a dreadful situation that never should have happened in first place.
All we can do is hope for the best and some kind of justice can be found for Maddie whatever has happened to her.

Well if an arrest is imminent within 48 hours as a result of the DNA tests then that suggests that the samples match with someone already known to the investigation. It will be interesting to see who that is.

This is a sad development. This means that they have not found the little girl and she may very well not be alive. This is too sad.
Can you give us a link to the story, please?

EDIT: Confused has got it SO right, this is SO NOT ABOUT the McCann's it is about MADDIE, for heaven's sake, if she is still alive, she must be terrified.

on the one hand, i think we've heard this so many times before, on the other, channel 4 are usually pretty reliable, if thats possible for a media source. remember ust because the results are back, it doesnt mean any arrests will arise from it, the police can (although they havent) confirm the results are back, but they really wont be confirming whether there are going to be arrests from it. it might just prove that she died in the apartment and so negate the abduction theory once and for all
