You could try a n indoor aerial, with a plug in booster, they sell them in Argos.
Otherwise get a roof aerial it will last you "0 years, make sure you get a digital aerial fitted not an analogue one.

In north west kent I can get away with connecting the loop aerial on the top of a portable tv to a digibox, but upstairs only. About 15 miles from transmitter.

Yes if you have a good box, good signals and good indoor aerial. I do it occasionally, but you'll find C4,C5 and BBC2 not very strong and keep breaking up.
