I just came into town to visit my parents, and their car seemed to develop an electrical issue since its last trip to the shop. First the A/C went out. Then check the engine light came on. Now honking the horn opens the trunk. The airbag light goes on and off. And most recently, the speedometer and tachometer jump in spurts, even reporting that I was doing 50 mph at the stop sign.

Are there any easy diagnostics or solutions that I can use, or is this a case of going back to the shop (which they keep postponing......)?

Check the ground connection between the engine and the chassis. If it's bad or missing all the electricals will go crazy.

with this many things happining I can only think of a bad ignition switch, I know you probably thought the shop did something to the car but I doubt that the ignition switch is found in side the steering column if not behind the dash so it isnt easy to get to in most cases

Wow. The wiring is fubared. No simple solution that can be laid out here. Wiring schematics and electrical experience could fix it. In other words its going to have to go to the shop.

"Nomadd" has the right idea, also have the wiring at fuses checked! After that then any check Eng. lights or anything that may happen after that. Good Luck!
