Got to have some nice security software no matter what. If she loads any programs or anything onto her computer then she could run a risk. Get something like Panda Internet security.

Viruses can come from a number of different sources, and an unsecured connection is only one of them.
1. If the computer is on a network, if any workstation on that network becomes infected, many can spread directly through shared folders.
2. Removable drives - floppies, flash/thumb drives, etc. can all contain viruses.
3. Sharing documents. I once received a resume in Word, that contained a macro virus. Sorry, didn't hire that guy.
4. Installed applications. Very seldom, but Microsoft even shipped CD's once containing a virus.
Best practice is to protect your investment, and keep going. Putting up firewalls, investing in a anti-virus solution (see Trend Micro PC-Cillin), and safe computer usage (no personal usage on this computer) are all important.
Going paper will protect, but definitely cost more to keep her business running in the long run. Plus, if a competitor really wanted to hack you, they'd be smarter off hacking you customer database, offering them a discount on goods and stealing them all away. But then that's also a felony and could mean prison time if you could figure that out..

That would be ludicrous to just simply stop using the internet. You need to install firewall and antivirus. Use your moms computer for WORK ONLY and get you one to play on. Are you simply going to stop driving just because there are accidents on the road?/ NO!, You have auto insurance. Same logic. I have Avast antivirus and firewall as well as the microsoft firewall for over 2 years and I havent had any trouble. I am on the internet constantly. It isnt the internet that has the virus', it is the website you go to. Like MYSPACE and LIMEWIRE. They have backdoor virus' that people do not know about. Also, a lot of the chat rooms have these backdoor trojans.

If you don't have the internet, it would be very unlikely to get viruses. As long as she scans all of the CDs etc that goes into the computer and she doesn't have the internet, it should be fine.

Usually you get a virus through e-mail.
But you can also ge a virus if you share floppy disks or memory sticks with other people.
