Why do companies push to invoice by end of month?

Question

Companies are always pushing to get everything they can in before the end of the month. Why the urgency? Would it not just make the following month look a little better if something went through a day or two later?

If the company has expenses this month that relate to that invoice, then they want to show the income and the expense in the same month.
