I had my period about 2 weeks ago and today I started bleeding again with real heavy cramps and just 5 days ago I took a pregnancy test that came out positive. First of all is it possible for me to bleed during my pregnancy? Second, is this bleeding right now normal or should I be concerned and rush my appointment with my OB/GYN sooner? I just started this morning and have real heavy bleeding with heavy cramps.

As a matter of fact, in rare cases, women can have a normal period throughout the entire 9 month incubation period that the fetus is developing. This is a form of ectopic pregnancy where the egg is fertilized close to the opening of one of the fallopian tubes, causing the other to still release eggs. This in a way "tricks" the body into thinking it isn't pregnant, so a woman can have little or no side affects to the pregnancy.

Anything other than light spotting during pregnancy can be indicative of a miscarriage, but it is not necessarily a sure fire sign that you've had a miscarriage. Miscarriages depend on how long you've been pregnant, which is why I would then ask you, "How long you do think you might have been pregnant before you took the test?"

Since I'm only a medical student, I would call your OB-GYN and make an appointment for as soon as you can to have your OB-GYN make sure everythings a "go".

If the bleeding is more than your normal "heavy flow" amount, then it may be a sign of a miscarriage.

Yes, you can bleed while you're pregnant. Maybe you conceived right after your period and the bleeding now is just an early sign of pregnancy when the fetus embedded to the uterus wall.

However, you mentioned that you have heavy bleeding and heavy cramps. Why are you still here typing your question on Yahoo. You should call your doctor right away to have it check ASAP. The first trimester is the most fragial and critical during a pregnancy.

You should call your doctor and go to the hospital right now--ASAP-Best wishes to you.

Menstruation usually stops when a woman is pregnant. However, in some cases, a woman might have a period with less blood or that lasts fewer days than usual and still be pregnant. Your confusion is understandable because these signs can lead women to believe they are not pregnant. However, various kinds of bleeding can occur in early pregnancy. Women can get some spotting in their first trimester:

* when the fertilized egg implants in the uterus;
* if the pregnancy is abnormal in any way [i.e., ectopic pregnancy (implantation outside of the uterus, such as in a fallopian tube), a threatening miscarriage]; or,
* from bleeding as part of their menstrual cycle (this is extremely rare).

If you are bleeding more then just a few drops and you've had a positive pregnancy test then you need to go to the hospital. It is possible to bleed while pregnant with no harm to the baby, but it's kind of unlikely. If you are miscarrying you'll need a doctor to take care of you and help you make sure you don't have a serious infection afterwards.

It is possible for women to bleed during pregnancy. In any instance all bleeding should be reported to your midwife or GP immediately. It doesn't sound good considering your bleeding is accompanied by severe cramping. I'm sorry to say that it could be a possibility of miscarriage. Call your midwife or GP as soon as you can to make sure everything is okay.
