I have a 5 hour lay over in Vegas and 2 older teenagers with me.
What is a must see and ideas for things to do.
How long does it take to get to down town from airport?

A 5-hour layover doesn't leave much time. However if you're daring, hail a cab and take a cruise down the strip to downtown and back.
Take in all the sights and lights (depending on the time). Take a camera with you.
You might even see a free show going on (Mirage volcano, Bellagio dancing fountains, TI Sirens Show- if the layover is at night).
Caution: traffic on the strip is gridlocked most of the time; an awful time waster and bad for someone only there on layover.
Stop in at MGM Grand and have a look inside, see the lion habitat and such.
Walk the the street a block or two to the M&M store (From MGM Grand).
Don't get caught up in all the distractions and grandeur and be mindful of the time.
Wear a watch and make sure it's set to the local time.
Hail a cab back to the airport with at least one to one and half hours to spare. As mentioned before security is very tight and takes a while to go through. Have fun.

Only go Downtown if you want to see from a cab or you really want a cheap meal. Downtown is about 15 minutes from the airport by cab. The south end of the strip is a hop, skip, and a jump from the airport. You may spend more time waiting for a cab (15-20 minutes if the airport is busy) than you will going to the Strip.

There is a lot to see, and obviously so little time. Unless there is an attraction you want to see, I would suggest eating at a buffet at MGM, New York New York, or Luxor. There is a lot to see (in an hour or two), you can easily get bite to eat there (not cheap, but not expensive), and you are near to a bunch of other resort. If time permits, you can ask the cab driver to drive down the Strip on the way to or from the airport.

Be careful if you are on a schedule. Everything looks very close together. You can kill 15 minutes walking to a resort that is next door! Security at the airport can be terrible, depending on how busy the airport is. I would set aside 2 hours for security.

It's only a matter of minutes from the airport to the strip. A bit longer to downtown. Don't downtown because there isn't anything for teens to do.

Only 5 hours, keep in mind you have to go back through security which is a killer in Vegas. Last time I was there it took over an hour and it was 6 in the morning.

The most you can do is do a quick trip on the strip...let them see the casinos. Or hit LV Hilton and do the Star Trek experience.

It often takes an hour or more to get a taxi from the airport.

So, here is what I would do if I only had 5 hours.

Get a limo, they will meet you at the AP

Cruise the strip down to Caesars Palace. You would have a couple of hours to check out the Forum Shops at Caesars.

If you just want to do an inexpensive tour of the strip. Go to "Ground Level Transportation 0" take the #109 Maryland Pkwy South bus out to the SSTT(9 minutes) transfer to the Deuce(strip bus). Go to the upper level of the Deuce, get the front seats "if possible". Cruise the strip down to the Stratosphere, get off at the Stratosphere.

then you can either take the reverse route back up the strip to the SSTT, & #109 N to the AP or you could catch the #108 Paradise South bus(25 minutes) back to the AP.

Assume traffic will be bad so allow one hour to and from the airport to where you want to go. Also add another hour to get back past the security check point. So you got two hours.
(You do not want to miss your flight!)

First, I would cruise down the strip on a taxi. That way they get to see just how much stuff is there. Once they realize how big the place is, they will know they can not see it all in just a couple of hours. Give them each a camera and have one on each side of the car so they can get pictures of both sides.

If they are into shopping, go to the Forum at Caesars.

If they are into nature, go see Red Rock Canyon.

If they are into amusement parks, go to the top of the Stratsophere. (The old Vegas World.)

If they are into food, go to any of the low price buffets and let them pig out.

If they are into colleges and education, UNLV is just north of the airport.

you could take the taxi to the Las Vegas strip for a few bucks. then you could visit New York! New York!. It has a roller coaster ride and a game room that's pretty popular with the teens. and you could also walk to the Bellagio to watch the famous water show for free! and the Pirate show at the Treasure Island is also for free! and the Mirage has a live habitat for their white tigers. So each hotel has unique feature to offer........so you have see what suits your family.
i don't recommend Downtown Vegas. It's has an older look and is not that appealing for the younger crowd. They probably wouldn't like it as much as The Strip.

You need to be back at the airport 1 hour early or so. To beat traffic and get re-check in. Not much time. MGM has the lion thing. Thats all. Rest is for the adults, no kids nears the machines or gambling pits!

Vegas is really not for the teen UNDERAGE crowd!
Just rent movies at the airport to watch.
