The issue with the gas is two fold. First are the countries that possess the gas. They can hike prices to make life miserable. Second are the companies who bring it to the country that needs it and refines it. They hike up prices very high and blame it on the country who first hike it up. It is an issue of politics and greed.

Maybe you mean oil. Gasoline is made of oil and you get about 30 gallons of gasoline from 100 gallons of oil. Oil is a non renewable energy source, which is currently used up at a rate of 28 million barrel a day. Many important things are made from oil (plastics) and it is really a tremendous waste to use it as energy source.
Or you mean natural gas, which comes straight as is from deep in underground and usually is used for heating.
Because oil and natural gas are limited, there will be a shortage eventually and that will be the end of our bliss.

The Saudi's and Iranians are holding oil production down to keep the barrel price up.
The Iranians do this because oil money is their entire economy.
The Saudi's do this to provide money to support terrorism.
