does anyone know where a person can go and live the really simple life without the rat race we live in in the U.S.A. and not have the high cost of living we have in most parts of the world today?? I want a simple life. I don't need cell phones suv's and all the other hi tech gadgets. I'd like a place like the US right after WWII

I regret to inform you that there is no such place really. It is the demographic boom everywhere in the world that has made the world either expensive or hectic. Stay in the U.S. ,I have traveled a lot around the world, and I worked in the U.S. (legally ) and I found the lifestyle very good compared to what we have here in Mexico. Of course there are better places in the U.S. than others. Good luck in your search.

If you can live like a Mexican, you can live very cheaply in Mexico. But you have to have a good command of the Spanish language and live in a town that other gringos are not attracted to. Prices are high in all the resort towns and the gringo retirement towns of San Miguel de Allende, and the towns on the north shore of Lake Chapala.
To work in Mexico, you have to get an FM3 visa. You have to have a company there sponsor you and state that your job is not taking away a job a Mexican could do.
To just live and not work, you must show:
1. VALID PASSPORT AND ONE PHOTOCOPY.
Passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining. If person is a legal resident of U.S., a copy of the front and back of the alien registration card is also required.
2. LETTER FROM THE BANK that proves a minimum monthly deposit of One Thousand ($1,000) dollars per dependent.
OR
COPIES OF YOUR BANK STATEMENTS for the last 6 months that proves your monthly deposit covers the amount stated above.
Most retirees do it this way.
Some people go to Mexico and buy a hotel or a Bed and Breakfast and live off that income. I don't know how they do that (search the web for B & Bs that sound like they have gringo owners and email them).
Some people make a living (in resort areas) trying to sell timeshares to tourists. But I don't know how you get into that.
The first thing you should do is to get an FMT (tourist visa), and you can travel around Mexico for up to 180 days looking for the best town for you.

I will have to let you borrow my time machine some time; although I hear parts of Australia might fit your description.
