if it's a check, it's not direct deposit - they are two different things. the "check" might not even clear in YOUR bank account by Friday. If you're depositing it in your account, how are you getting the money to him? If he does have direct deposit, there's nothing for you to deposit and he won't get the money any earlier than normal payday, when the bank adds the funds to his acct

Are you trying to kite funds between the two to cover checks at one hoping that check will not clear until Friday?
I don't understand the YOU account and DIRECT deposit otherwise.

I assume that you both reside in the same state? If so, then it would take at least 24 hours to debit his account. Check with your bank to be same. You may have to hold it for a day or deposit it on Friday to be sure.

Chances are it would bounce. Checks can clear pretty quickly, especially when you don't want them to.
Also, some banks don't post direct deposits till midnight. So the money isn't available till Saturday.
Wait till Friday to deposit the check.

if your friend banks at the same bank as you do, it will clear his acocunt as soon as you deposit it with the teller (depositing it into an atm machine may take an additional 1-2 business days to process)
if your friend opened their account in the same state as you but different bank add an additional 1-2 business days, same actually applies if same bank as you but opened in a different state
if your friend opened their account in a different state and at a different bank it may take up to a week, 5 business days, for it to clear
where they opened their account is actually ont he check itself, most on the lower right hand side where it will list the branch it was physically opened at or at least the state
wamu says the branch
wells fargo says the state
