I want to do it for fun, to earn extra cash but don't want to go to school I have friends that have done great masssages and I wouldn't be charging nearly as much as certified massage therapists. I just want to make sure this isn't illegal. A back rub is a back rub.

Charging a fee would require a license. There are also things that can happen, even with "just" a backrub. You need insurance for your own protection. If those with licenses find out you are doing this, you can be sure they will do something to stop you.

You can rub all the backs you want, but you can't legally charge for it, or tell people your a massage therapist. Of course if people want to tip you that's different, but if you make a habit of it Uncle Sam may come knocking (i.e., do this with only your close friends. If any person complains that you hurt them you will be in big doo doo and may get sued big time!)

There are no state laws in California regarding massage therapists, however it is very probable that your local city or county will require AT LEAST a business license for you to charge for such services. You will need to check with that local authority.
