I am 41 and have never really worn make up and I've never had a facial. I really want to do this, but alittle unsure of where to go.

This is a good question. I've either gone to estheticians who have been recommended to me or who have worked for a long time at an established salon w/ a good reputation.

Ask friends, check out local spas & salons to get a feeling for the place or see if you can find online reviews for local businesses. (e.g. Yelp)

Allure magazine has an online directory of spas & salons throughout the U.S. it has reviewed. Here's the link: http://www.allure.com/directory

The Cosmetics Cop site is a good one for skin care & makeup information.

I would NEVER go to those places in the mall offering free makeovers. They are just trying to sell you products and you usually come out looking like a clown- this is especially problematic when you still need to shop afterwards! Most towns have makeup artists that will come to your home and show you what to wear and how to apply. When I was looking for one I found names in the phone book but also went to local bridal websites- they always have advertisements for people that do independent contracting in there. It only costs around 30-40 bucks and is well worth it to know exactly what/how to enhance your beauty the right way.

LOL by any chance do you live in Los Angeles? Because I work in a spa and my friend does facials and I do make up. But seriously ask for his or her certification, and ask the makeup artist how long they have been doing makeup and also ask if they have a portfolio of their work.

Well for facials they should be properly trained. If it is your first time you might want to skip extractions. Makeup, that depends on the artist. Not all of them are trained.
