We are looking to install a 6 foot privacy hedge in our backyard, as we back to a busy city road. The evergreens we use will have to must thrive in open, sunny areas, and be able to withstand the winters. It will need to span a width of 100 feet, and be dense enough to discourage our young children from going through them and running out in the road. So far, our local nurseries have suggested Upright Junipers. Is this the best tree? Also, what should the spacing be to create this thick, wall-like hedge? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, as we are coming to the end of the evergreen planting season (Sept 15 should be the absolute latest we plant).

I'm a big fan of upright junipers.

Spacing is going to be an issue, because you want the plants to mature in, and not crowd out eachother. That sort of proper spacing won't give you any immediate coverage, nor will it discourage the children from running past/ through them.

For the junipers, depending on the exact selection, I'd space them 4-5' from center of one plant to the center of the next.

Spruces would be my other suggestion, especially white (Picea glauca), black (Picea glauca 'densata')or Norway (Picea abies). If you're going to plant any of those, I'd space them 10-15' from center to center.

What to do about the space between? I'd plant an inexpensive deciduous shrub that you can cut down/ out as the evergreens mature in. Consider honeysuckle (Lonicera), Spirea (Spiraea x Vanhoutte) or even lilac (Syringa vulgaris).

Good luck-
I hope that this helps

Hemlock grows up there and makes a lovely hedge.

Norway, black, or Serbian Spruces work great in your northern zone.
