I went in to negotiate salary with a company I have had three interviews with. The monthly salary they offered was $1,400.!!! Now, I did just graduate from college which took five years I have a minor and have had several internships. Plus the company offered NO benefits. Were they trying to take advantage of me because I am younger? How could they only offer me that measly sum?

They can offer any amount they want to as long as it's at least minimum wage. You can accept or refuse. They are offering that little either because that's all they can afford, or all they want to afford - it's not likely because they are trying to take advantage of you.

That does sound pretty low, although it depends on the field you are in. Even if you negotiate with them, you aren't likely to get twice that amount or anything close. Sounds like your best option is to keep looking.

As I am not sure what degrees you hold, but without any experience, or a foothold in the door (have a relative/friend in a high position in a company), this is normal. You also didn't state what is the State in which you live and are seeking employment as it makes a difference what the earning rates are. What most young people out of college do is take a job, and after some experience, maybe a year or two (if the company is good), go and look for something else with a higher pay and benefit package. This is also the reason why most companies don't really pay out-of-college hires great salaries unless they're in the financial industry and were recruited on college campus (the top 10%) or are currently employed during the summer as interns and prove themselves capable. When they do come on board, it is for substantial dollars.

My finance company is headquartered in NYC.

Of course a company can do that. Just because you have all kinds of qualifications doesn't mean the position needs it. It seems that job is an obvious NO so just look for something better and when they give you an offer, counter it with something a little higher.

I think it would depend on the position you were applying for. What one company pays lower on may be a high paying job in another company.
