This display was created by one Carson Williams of Ohio. There are two companies that make controllers for Christmas lights synchronized to music.

Light-O-Rama is a do it yourself operation that can use from 8 to 400 + channels to program lights and songs. By using their software, the programmer (Mr. Williams) could break the song down into 0.05 seconds segments. The software allows you you tell their controllers to turn on a light, fade a light, or flash/shimmer a light circuit. The display designer can add as many lights to the circuit as he desires (up to the rated capacity of the light controller - either 15 amps or 20 amps).

After many hours of programming the song, laying out the circuits, connecting the lights to the controller, the song can be shown and enjoyed by the viewing public.

By broadcasting your music on a small FM transmitter, the public can tune their radios to the display and enjoy the display in the privacy of their cars.

Another manufacturer is called Animated Lighting. They are used more in large or commercials displays.

It has been reported that Mr. Williams used LOR during his breakout year, and has converted to Animated Lighting for the commercial displays that he does full time (he decorated a shopping center in Colorado last year http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsqBo-p2wU0

It was done with a soundboard and a switchboard... Not realy all that hard to do, like controlling stage lights at a concert.
