When you installed XP on the computer, you accidently told it to create a second parition (or section) on the hard drive. The first is the c drive, and the second the new d drive.

To get rid of the second partition, you can purchase a program like Partition Magic which will allow you to merge the two partitions together without losing any of the files on the first partition.

But since this is a "new install" and you probably do not have enough on it to want to spend $50-75 for the program to protect the files, I would reinstall in Windows.

This time during the install, right after the F8 to agree, you will be ask about partitions and formatting. Be sure to delete any existing partitions on the hard drive, and then tell it to re-partition using the whole drive. Then let it format and install XP.

Once done, you will be back to a single drive (c).

You installed the o/s in the wrong partition
Apparently, you either partitioned your drive into two drives, C and D or you overwrote the restore drive which is usually D

You messed up big time, if you didn't have your drivers saved.

Repartition the DOS and remove D
Then reformat
then install the o/s again

You probably created a new partition instead of deleting the partitions and creating one new large partition. Go through the process of reinstall again, this time when windows gives you the option to partition, wipe out both partitions, create one single partition and install.
