These questions are always ambiguous. 56 is 4 x 14, with 14 halfway between 12 and 16. so 4 x 19 = 76 would follow that pattern with the 2nd set of numbers. But you can invent endless other patterns. The trick is seeing the same one the question writer came up with.

I think that 2(sum of no.)=76. So, 76 should come in the equation - 17 ( ) 21 = 17 (76) 21
It is because in the solved eqation this formula is used.
2(12+16) = 56

61 goes in there. 56 is 44 more than 12 and 40 more than 16.
Using the same logic, 61 is 44 more than 17 and 40 more than 21.

61 --The numbers only the ends are 5 plus the number in the first sequence. Add 5 to the middle number and you get 61. It's deductive reasoning that brings you to that conclusion.
