If the car is using water, then you have a leak. Exactly where it is you will have to find out. When you run the engine does water leak from the hoses or the radiator, you would notice if the heater leaked as most are in the passenger compartment, if no visible leak then the water is going through the engine and this is probably the head gasket and is a garage job. A blockage in the pipes would just cause overheating and not much water loss.

Check for leaks. After the car is hot, turn it off and look on the ground under it for drips and/or puddles. If it leaks, then find out what part of the cooling system it's coming from and repair or replace it. If you don't see any leaks and it is still using a lot of water, then you probably have a blown head gasket.
Another check to make sure of this is to look in the radiator and see if you have a lot of oil in your antifreeze/water. If not, then check and see if your oil has water in it or looks like cream. If either of these conditions exist, then you definitely have a blown head gasket.

If you're losing water, it must be going somewhere, it may be a bad heater core, broken radiator hose or something else.

To check if it is the head gasket:

1. Check your oil. If head gasket is broken, water might be be going into your oil. This happens when the head gasket breaks between the water and oil lines. When you pull out the oil dipstick it will look like chocolate milk if water is in your oil.

2. Do you have a big plume of white smoke. Water getting into combustion chamber. Head gasket is broken between water chamber and combustion chamber.

3. Water is leaking out somewhere from the side of the engine.

One reason that many automobile makers simplify the sprint indicators is that some instances no longer something is incorrect with a device yet drivers get fearful approximately its circulation. Such could be the case alongside with your temp gage. only using fact it strikes in the direction of warm does no longer propose something is incorrect! there's a factor it rather is only too cool for a cooling fan to come back on and nonetheless above how cool a automobile will run while transferring. despite the fact that if this is not overheating, there could be no longer something incorrect. despite the fact that if it rather is over heating, it rather is plenty extra possibly to be the fan relay then something (or a foul fuse on the circuit).

I can't tell without seeing the car.

If the water is not leaking out, and you have to add water often, I am afraid you have a bad head gasket, or a warped head. This allows the water to get into the combustion chamber, and it gets burned away. Do you notice white smoke coming out of the tailpipe? This is a dead give-away.

Check your oil, too. Is there water in with the oil? If so, it is not good. Have a mechanic check it out quickly. You could ruin your engine!

Good luck,

Stevo.

Check your oil see if there is a whitish gunge around the oil filler cap. If there is its the oil emulsifying with the oil and yes your head gasket has gone

Using water, head gasket blown. When you top up water, does the temperature gauge fluctuate wildly? If yes, definitely head gasket gone!

Don't waste your time looking for leaks etc. If you have little or no knowledge of car repair, have it TOWED in to a reputable shop asap before you damage the motor.

Sounds like the water pump. If not, could be the radiator or a hose connected to it! Most likely the water pump!! DO NOT DRIVE WHILE NEEDLE IS IN THE RED OR YOU WILL BURN UP YOUR MOTOR !!
