Shi Tao is Innocent could not be more incorrect! More important is the beliefs of liberals and conservatives. They find homes in a particular political party based on their beliefs. The modern political liberal and conservative differ quite a bit from their traditional definitions. And, liberal, conservative, and libertarian, differ in North America from other parts of the world. The short version is liberals favor personal freedoms but want control over your finances. Conservatives favor financial freedom but want control over your personal issues. Followers of the Abrahamic god typically find a home with the Republican Party. In religion change is tantamount to heresy, conservatives are against change. Religious people often call themselves conservative as they have found that resistance to change comforting. Anything that confronts their beliefs must be opposed. The liberals trust in their generosity so much they have come to believe that we all must be generous. This is where the socialism has entered. They want us all to be forced to be generous through higher taxes and redistribution of wealth because we lack our own sense of "goodness" to be generous. They have wealth envy and blame the successful for the unsuccessful. Others that benefit from leaching off others support this. They all find a home with the Democratic Party. Authoritarians want control of both financial and personal matters. Libertarians want both personal and financial freedom. The party names are only names and have nothing to do with a republican or democratic form of government. By the way the United States is NOT a democracy and it isn't supposed to be. Democracy leads to dictatorship. The US is not a christian nation, it is a nation with a lot of christians. It was not founded on christianity.

Dem/Rep/Lib Beliefs:
On the average, the Democrats are considered more liberal and the Republicans are considered more conservative. However, there are liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats. The Republicans tend to favor less government and the Democrats tend to favor more government, when dealing with domestic problems and individual and states' rights. Republicans tend to favor economic laws that regulate as little as possible. Democrats favor legislation that regulates industry for the protection of the consumer. Democrats tend to favor some sort of government aid for those individuals who need assistance. Republicans tend to favor was to help the states and local, private charities help individuals in need. Libertarians believe in a strong support of individual civil liberties, private property and the free market economy with little government intervention. They favor the least amount of government interference. They believe the individual should be left alone to do as he/she wishes, as long as there is no harm to any other person or group.
