No, under God was added in the 50's during the McCarthy communist witch-hunt era. It was an attempt to become more "moral" of a nation and steer away from those "godless Commies".

The K of C seem to have been at least partially responsible - but the rest of your question:
"to repay...?
America for saving the Vatican from Hitler. Was Pius xii the real power and mastermind behind the Holocaust and Hitler was only the "in place" fall-guy if something went wrong. Did the pope walk away scot-free above all suspicion?"
has no basis in historical fact.
"Between 1924 and 1954, the Pledge of Allegiance was worded:
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands; one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
In 1954, during the McCarthy era and communism scare, Congress passed a bill, which was signed into law, to add the words "under God." The current Pledge reads:
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands; one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
n 1953, the Roman Catholic men's group, the Knights of Columbus mounted a campaign to add the words "under God" to the Pledge. The nation was suffering through the height of the cold war, and the McCarthy communist witch hunt. Partly in reaction to these factors, a reported 15 resolutions were initiated in Congress to change the pledge. They got nowhere until Rev. George Docherty (1911 - ) preached a sermon that was attended by President Eisenhower and the national press corps on 1954-FEB-7. His sermon said in part: "Apart from the mention of the phrase 'the United States of America,' it could be the pledge of any republic. In fact, I could hear little Muscovites repeat a similar pledge to their hammer-and-sickle flag in Moscow." After the service, President Eisenhower said that he agreed with the sermon. In the following weeks, the news spread, and public opinion grew. Three days later, Senator Homer Ferguson, (R-MI), sponsored a bill to add God to the Pledge. It was approved as a joint resolution 1954-JUN-8. It was signed into law on Flag Day, JUN-14. President Eisenhower said at the time: "From this day forward, the millions of our schoolchildren will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural schoolhouse, the dedication of our nation and our people to the Almighty." 4 With the addition of "under God" to the Pledge, it became both "a patriotic oath and a public prayer...Bellamy's granddaughter said he also would have resented this second change." 3
The change was partly motivated by a desire to differentiate between communism, which promotes Atheism, and Western capitalistic democracies, which were at least nominally Christian. The phrase "Atheistic Communists" has been repeated so many times that the public has linked Atheism with communism; the two are often considered synonymous. Many consider Atheism as unpatriotic and "un-American" as is communism.

Well, all the stories have been recounted and various recollections of past events has been repeated .
When you say "under God" , do you mean the pledge of allegiance?
Wilkepedia says it did start with the Knights of Columbus being concerned that there was no diety in the phrase. Ultimately it was Eisenhower who stuck those two words there.
-----
Paraphrasing Docherty’s sermon, Eisenhower said
These words [“under God”] will remind Americans that despite our great physical strength we must remain humble. They will help us to keep constantly in our minds and hearts the spiritual and moral principles which alone give dignity to man, and upon which our way of life is founded.

There was a second part to your question about Pius XII, and here is a link that appears to explain all that;

um no -- they did it because it was part of the gettysburg address.
all the popes are in a pile burried on top of each other in dante's inferno. some probably need to be in the bottom being chewed on by satan for eternity -- but the punishment of popes is still apt -- those that framed the groundwork for corruption line the bottom of the pile.
you should check out the jesus seminar. they have pretty much determined that even the apostles had their own agenda and propaganda in their separate versions of the gospel. from the very first christians it was corrupted.

Yes, and the Masons control international politics, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion is in fact the underlying truth in regards to global finance, there are aliens hidden in a bunker in Area 51... Either you posted this comment as an act of malice or you are lost in a haze of invented conspiracy theories.
