I don't really understand it. If someone could explain it that'd be great.

THANKS!!

4 - x = 11
4 - x + x = 11 + x
4 = 11 + x
4 - 11 = 11 + x - 11
-7 = x

Or you could do it this way:
4 - x = 11
4 - x - 4 = 11 - 4
-x = 7
(-x) / (-1) = 7 / (-1)
x = -7

4 minus X is equal to 11 but you don't know what X is. First there are two sides to the problem left and right. What you want to do is get the X all alone on either the left or right side so you no what its value is. In this problem first subtract 4 from both sides of the equation.
4 - X - 4 = 11 - 4
Now you can perform a mathematic function 4 - 4 is 0 on the left and 11 - 4 is 7 on the right.
0 - X = 7
You can drop the 0 as it has no value and it leaves,
- X = 7
Now - X is the same as saying (-1 times X). Now with this in mind divide both sides by negative 1.
X = 7 divided by -1.
7 divided by -1 equals negative 7 so
X = -7

To Pabama: The letters represent the unknown variables, you idiot.

To asker:
4 - x = 11
-x = 11 - 4 >>> Take the 4 and put it the right side of the equal sign. Remember, the sign of any variable or constant changes when you put them to the opposite side of the equal sign.
-x = 7 >>> 11 minus 4 equals 7
x = - 7 >>> You don't want to leave your answer as -x = 7, so you switch the signs on both sides. -x changes to x and 7 changes to -7. You MUST change the signs on both sides.
To verify your answer, you can check.
4 - x = 11
4 - (-7) = 11
4 + 7 = 11 (minus sign times a minus sign equals a plus sign)
11 = 11

4 - x = 11

To solve:

Add x to both sides

4 - x + x = 11 + x

4 (- x + x) = 11 + x

4 = 11 + x

Subtract 11 from both sides

4 - 11 = x + 11 - 11

4 - 11 = x (+ 11 - 11)

4 - 11 = x

Solve

-7 = x

or

x = -7

Why not add x to both sides of equation? Then, 4 = 11+x. How can it be that a number x plus 11 equal only 4? Well, x is what we call a "negative quantity". If we now subtract 11 from both sides we find that -7=x, which is to say that x=the MINUS quantity 7. In other words, you are 7 IN DEBT. If we add 7 plus -7 we get 0. Thus, MINUS 7 CANCELS 7 to yield 0.

1. Look up "Negative numbers"
2. Read this:

4-x=11
4-x+x=11+x
4=11+x
x+11-11=4-11
x=4-11=-7

In math subtracting a negative becomes adding rather than subtracting.

That's why you subtract -7. The two minuses make the equation work.

If x= +7, the answer wouldn't be 11, it would be -3.

If x=15, then the equation would equal -11. To make it work you have to use the double negative, so in effect the numbers are being added, not subracted, to equal 11.

Get the x on one side, the number on the other. In this case, first subtract 11 from both sides:
4 -x -11 = 11 - 11
-x-7 = 0

Now, you want just x on one side ( not like above where -x is really -1x. So, you add x to both sides:
-x -7 +x = x
-7 = x

or x = -7

4 - x = 11
4 - x - 4 = 11 - 4 ( subtract 4 from both sides)

as long as you add the same number to both sides of the equal signs that is a legal operation, and that goes for multiplying both sides by the same number.

that leaves you with -x = 7 now multiply both sides by -1
(-1) (-x) = (7) (-1)
x = -7
