Start with an ignition tuneup, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor (if so equipped). The symptoms fit those of an ignition misfire to the tea, and your vehicle is old enough to need new spark plug wires if they've never been replaced.

When was the last time you had a complete tune-up done on it?
That's the first thing I would suggest. Sounds like a power issue to me which is usually from worn out ignition parts.

Take it to a three or four reputable repair shops and get written estimates for any required work.. Don't waste time and money replacing parts that may not be faulty.

the first thing I'd check is plugs and wires. I'd replace them both. could also be bad gas. it's a start at least ;)
