Well I think the transmission got hurt more. What does the book say about when to shift. Also if you can check the fluid level in the transmission. Most likely not a lot of real damange. Might want to change the engine oil if the the oil got real dirty. I have done worse to cars, just if you can check the fluids and if it is all good then you should be okay. Might want to take it in for a free check at sears or some place you trust.

You engine should be fine, don't know what kind of car or truck you drive. You engine would have been reeving about twice normal it's normal speed R.P.Ms. You should have been able to hear this at 75 mph, next time turn your radio or CD player down so you can hear. If it wasn't over reeved, it got a good blowing out. So I think your ok, other wise you would know if the engine was damaged by now.

Actually, the next drive shifter position from normal overdrive (the very first drive shifter position) is called standard drive and it allows you to drive normally as fast as you care to. Check your owner's manual, and any "drive" position (overdrive or standard drive) can be driven in at any time and you can shift between the two while underway. The other gears have speed limits, but you'd really hear the engine complaining when you went too fast in those gears (like "1", or "2" etc)

you didnt really hurt the motor if you only drove it for 8 miles. you simply wasted more gas than you would have if you would have shifted all the way to 5th gear.

you must have a really good car if you managed 75 miles per hour in second gear!
I should get it checked out if it starts to do anything odd, not really sure if it's as bad as my bf driving across the city with the handbrake on...but that didn't do his car any harm. ;)

I've done that before. It didn't kill your engine, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's spilled milk, you know?
But obviously, you don't want to make that mistake again.
The bigger question is how on earth do you drive 75 in 2nd gear and not feel/hear it???? That's what you need to worry about...

Other than a little extra heat I doubt you did any damage, if you are concerned at least get an oil and filter change.

Well, you sure didn't do it any good, and probably over revved it. But if it didn't overheat or do any strange things, you may have dodged the bullet this time.
