Conservatives need to conform to traditional standards of masculinity/feminity. Now GWB's emotional nature is out -- although if you knew to read between the lines, you could see it all along.

...Bush was asked to explain himself. The Republican president told assembled world leaders, "I know what I believe and I believe what I believe is right."

And, in discussing the threat posed by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Bush said: "After all, this is the guy who tried to kill my dad."

I made up my mind that Hussein needs to go. The policy of my government is that he goes.-- G. W. Bush

If you don't think GWB is a conservative, you don't know what conservatism IS.
conservatism
Pronunciation: k&n-'s&r-v&-"ti-z&m
Function: noun
2 b : a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions, and preferring gradual development to abrupt change

He rags on stability all the time. That's what's important to a CONSERVative (along with monitoring other people's morals so everyone will be the same and then Conservatives don't have to think for themselves). Not that they're very good at CREATING stability -- it's just important to them.

President George W Bush on Tuesday said a stable Pakistan is very important for a stable world.

PRESIDENT BUSH: And secondly, I know how important our relationship is to help promote stability in this part of the world.

What does stubborness & stupidity have to do with machismo?

No. It's designed to convey the illusion of competence to those who have been conditioned to think in Sound Bites.

Mystrywmn, stubbornness and stupidity have everything to do with Macho--which is a word from a culture whose ideal of Masculinity is a male chicken.

They have nothing to do with Mensch, the ideal of a man strong enough to keep his word and honor his obligations. A man who isn't aggressive, because he isn't afraid.

Bush could never be Mensch, but the brainless, fear-based bluster of Machismo is something he can do.

I am confused by your statements. First of all, he is not a conservative. He is a moderate. Secondly, what makes you assume that "conservatives need to conform to traditional standards ..." Are you implying that liberal, moderate, libertarian, communist and socialist males do not?

Believe me, the "traditional standard" for men is a traditional standard for a reason. It was established by men. It is the most natural way for men to be. Strength, character, courage etc. There is nothing wrong with that standard unless you happen to be a man who cannot live up to it.

Believe me, it is easy to take anyone's words out of context and make whatever case you wish. Those quotes sure sound better to me than," I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky." Or "It depends on what your definition of "is" is." Or, "I voted against the 87 billion before I voted against it". Or, "There is no controlling legal authority".
If you catch my drift.
